The fossil fuel industry relentlessly promotes #CarbonCaptureAndStorage as a climate positive technofix. But internal documents leaked by whistleblowers reveal a decidedly more realistic view on the emissions reduction potential of #CCS than the industry presents publicly.

IEEFA.org director of resource planning analysis David Schlissel says: "Many, many comments from oil companies and utilities say this tech really doesn't work." IEEFA states: "It's worth noting that not one single #CCS project has ever reached its target CO2 capture rate."

Fossil fuel supermajor ExxonMobil produced a series of kids' videos touting #CCS but executive suits steered the creative team away from the idea that carbon is bad or that #CarbonCapture is difficult. Yet that's precisely the company's experience with CCS according to staffers.

"When we talk about the failure of #CCS we generally talk about capturing not storage. But when you look at capacity and how much has actually been sequestered, it's very little" says David Ho, climate professor at University of Hawaii at Manoa and senior researcher at Columbia University.

When CO2 is sequestered there's no guarantee it stays there. "Because we have no cradle to grave tracking we have no way of actually knowing how much is really being collected, how much is leaking and how much is really staying underground" says CarolynRaffensperger from SEHN.

CarolynRaffensperger says: "They could be lethal. We talk about the kill zone or a fatality zone around a CO2 pipeline. We don't talk about that with oil and gas pipelines. These are uniquely dangerous and underregulated."

Scientists say #CCS connected to fossil fuel use delivers little benefit when it comes to tackling climate change. "It doesn't make sense to use CCS to prolong our use of fossil fuels, especially to produce electricity." But that's exactly what Net Zero Teesside plans to do.

Stanford University professor Mark Z. Jacobson says that because #CCS needs energy to function, hitching it to a fossil fuel power station is actually worse for the climate when CO2 lifecycle emissions are considered. "They actually increase carbon dioxide emissions and increase air pollution."

By rebranding #CCS as a climate solution and guzzling government subsidies, the fossil fuel industry is creating a new revenue stream and taxpayers are paying for it. And Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband, Sarah Jones MP and Mike Amesbury MP are signing the cheques.
