Later today the European Space Agency / JAXA(Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) BepiColombo space probe will fly by Mercury as close as 150 miles (230 km) to the planet‘s surface. It's amazing going back to the late 1980s and seeing how dominant Ariane was in the commercial launch market. In a report from 1987 European Space Agency completely writes off the Shuttle as a competitor. It's also crazy how aware Europe was that it needed to develop a reusable system even then.
