The Padres, who racked up a luxury tax bill of close to $40 million in 2023, would prefer to reset their penalty level next season. While things can change, that could mean a payroll comfortably below $200 million: theathletic.com/5142512/2023/1…

Ohtani camp presented Giants the exact deal that Ohtani ended up finalizing with LA. 'We were agreeable to it,' Zaidi said. Then Giants were told it was in Ohtani's hands. Obviously, Shohei picked Dodgers.

Jung Hoo Lee’s Giants agreement includes an $18.8M AAV and what would be an $18.8M posting fee. That was likely out of the comfort range of the Padres, who still are seeking more pitching. SD may have to pivot to the secondary free agent and trade markets for a lefty bat or two.

Not to be all super alarmist, but if someone were to say this Yankees-Padres Juan Soto deal was on the 1-yard-line, I'm getting the feeling it's more like that half-a-yard line.

As the Padres and Yankees continue working toward a Juan Soto trade, Jake Cronenworth is another trade candidate for San Diego, as Mark Feinsand said. Cronenworth’s seven-year, $80 million extension begins in 2024. He has an eight-team no-trade clause that kicked in this offseason.

As Joel Sherman reported, Yankees have been softening on the idea of surrendering Michael King. They're also more willing to include Drew Thorpe, I'm told, though it's unclear whether they would do both at the same time.

With a critical 2024 approaching, A.J. Preller says the Padres won’t shy away from targeting lower-level prospects in potential trades. “If they’re wired right and they have a lot of ability, they may come quicker than guys that are at a higher level.” theathletic.com/5106021/2023/1…

The Yankees and Padres continue to talk Juan Soto, tho NYY is (so far) reluctant to part w/ its highest-end young talent, and they're still keeping tabs on Cody Bellinger, whose early ask has been described as very high, source tells The Athletic. Read: theathletic.com/5100401/2023/1…
