One of the really great things about September (& there are many) is the quality of light. It makes it possible to show the true colours of some of the best #passiflora Here we have P. ‘Byte’ - one of the best of the incarnata/cincinatta/edulis crosses. & P. x violacea ‘Victoria’

#Passiflora edulis seed sown from a supermarket fruit early spring 2023, grafted onto P. caerulea rootstock late summer 2023, survived winter in greenhouse (min 5C) & summer (max 42C which would have killed it without grafting) first flower buds mid September 2024 Exciting times!

Some very lovely #hedychium today. In the greenhouse H. ‘Tai Gold Crown’ a paler shade than the first flower, the more yellow H. ‘Tai Golden Goddess’ and outside H. gardnerianum, some forms of which (I think this is the Hannay’s of Bath form) flower reliably in September.

Our 2nd last garden club visit for the year (and it’s been a busy one) Northam and Bideford Jolly Gardens and they very much lived up to their name (as did the weather). In answer to a question about how the garden changes during the year I pulled up a couple of January shots.

This year #passiflora ‘Sapphire’, an old hybrid of P. edulis f. flavicarpa by John Vanderplank has performed excellently in the greenhouse cascading down from the roof. A top recommend for the frost free greenhouse! I hear rumours of a polyploid form, could be interesting!

Time for a bit of #dahlia appreciation. D. ‘Le Baron’ and D. Emory Paul’ are two great colours in the dinnerplate group. D. ‘Twynings After Eight’ is a single with gloriously dark foliage that flowers nonstop with a bit of dead heading and D. ‘Kenora Macob’ - deliciously dark!

#Hedychium in the greenhouse today. All are from American breeder Doyle Smittle’s Tai series. All are beautifully scented: H. ‘Tai Gold Crown’ H. ‘Tai Golden Goddess’ H. ‘Tai Pink Profusion’

Part of next year’s plan (yes talking about next year already) is better performance from #passiflora ‘Michael’. Better position, light & feeding should give more flowers. I’ve also grafted it (somewhat hamfistedly - but 4 weeks on not dead yet!) but more material for another go

Some #passiflora princeps (formerly P. racemosa) hybrids from the greenhouse: P. ‘Kew Gardens’ (P. princeps/P. galbana hybrid - probably) P. ‘Pura Vida’ ( P. ‘Amethyst’ x P. princeps) P. ‘Buzios’ (naturally occurring hybrid of P. princeps & P. galbana &/or P. mucronata - probably

Fantastic garden! You will love it. Great opportunity to fit in a last garden visit of the year, to buy a few plants to go straight into your garden for next year and to stock up on calories for your next few months of hibernation.

Two plants that have thrived as part of our new additional tropical bed this year are the beautifully scented #hedychium ‘Corelli’ and #canna ‘Ev Avant’, the best of the yellows with red spots. Gives us some ideas for taking things further next year!

Our first form of #passiflora ‘Buzios’ has never set fruit. The new form has set 3 already in its first year of flowering. No guarantee that there will be seeds and no idea what the pollen parent is. However it suggests that planned crosses could be a possibility!

Cooler & shorter days bring the best out of some greenhouse #passiflora. The evening/night flowering P. ‘Kew Gardens’ will continue producing flowers through till Christmas, our hybrid P. ‘Di Scansano’ doing well & the glorious P. ‘Pura Vida’ coming into a massive autumn flush

This pretty little hybrid of #passiflora princeps we raised from seed marketed as P. princeps (rolls eyes extravagantly) is not as free flowering as I hoped it would be, but is now producing more flowers at tips - the jury is still out!

The promised flush of flowering on #passiflora ‘Pura Vida’ has arrived while P. ‘Buzios’ continues to flower non-stop and produce fruit. Passionflowers are one of the highlights of autumn!

Same cross, different result #Passiflora x violacea (old form together with a smaller form - presumably similar parents) P. x violacea ‘Victoria’ - the most commonly available form. P. x kewensis ‘Purple Passion’ P. x kewensis ‘Beervelde’ (new hardy form very like P. ‘Amethyst’)
