In 1948, two years after graduation, he was awarded a trophy as The Top Commonwealth tobacco farmer in Uganda. By 1949, Rwot Akera was producing 30% of the country's Tobacco and employing over 700 workers on his Farm. #MakerereAt100 #NyerereAt100

Unlike most graduates then who opted to work for the colonial establishment, education for self-reliance is what drove Rwot Akera into farming. He opted to drop teaching, a profession he had acquired from Makerere University. #NyerereAt100 #MakerereAt100

One of these students was Rwot Ananiya Akera, a former roommate of Mwalimu #NyerereAt100 and a graduate of Education.
