We spent 4 years working on this paper about the scientific, legal, economic, and governance considerations of whether coastal and marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) can help close the emissions gap. Please take a look and tell me if it was worth it. online.ucpress.edu/elementa/artic…

Thrilled to announce I have been awarded an European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant, and am joining UGent as an Associate Professor. With my project DIADAPT, I aim to investigate the genomic basis of climate adaptation in diatoms over both micro- and macroevolutionary timescales. #ERCStG

Incredibly proud to share this work, almost 6 years in the making, out in Science Magazine!!! 🎇 We've known for over a century that eukaryotes of all kinds anticipate the seasons (think: hibernation, flowering, reproduction), but what about bacteria?🦠 science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

This is really a stunning paper. Cyanobacteria exposed to shorter days (in the lab) "rewire" their membrane lipids to anticipate cold weather. When those cells are plunged into cold water, they have "two or three-times higher survival" than cells exposed to longer days.

Fantastic team work here. In the end, the Gulf Stream is *not* slowing down and the #AMOC ... just marginally. That's fascinating and relevant for climate modeling and the current and future needs for ocean observing! nature.com/articles/s4146…

Surviving in the seascape requires adopting sophisticated biological processes. It is not only a matter of light and nutrients. 🌊

There are now papers showing that the migration of academic communities from Twitter to other social media sites mostly failed. But they never fully returned to Twitter either. I wonder if we will ever see so many different communities interacting in the same online space again.

Ocean deoxygenation threatens marine ecosystems and fisheries. Pasquier et al., disentangle the effects of deoxygenation drivers on preformed oxygen and true oxygen utilization (TOU) using the novel concept of upstream exposure time. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…

Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) is a promising CO₂ removal (CDR) strategy, but monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) involves running computationally expensive climate models. We propose a statistical technique to simplify the MRV problem. egusphere.copernicus.org/preprints/2024…
