Just shows that institutions and funders don’t understand science. Katalin Kariko is a scientist’s scientist. Despite not being awarded grants and being demoted, she kept forging forward, and we are all the better for it. Congrats on your well deserved Nobel. amp.cnn.com/cnn/2020/12/16…
3) my god— because UPenn barely paid Katalin Kariko more than a lab assistant, Dr Kariko couldn’t afford a proper hotel and had to “sleep in the lab under her desk” and commuting to NIH, says her daughter. Talk about disrespect a hardworking scientist.

The irony at Penn is that clueless BS vendors who play the system, s.a. Philip E. Tetlock get 'prestigious' titles while Kariko gets disparaged for not playing 'H Index', citations & other crap.
But it's not just Penn: the science system has been progressively commoditized & gamed.
