Didn't know I could admire the legend (and my one time archive buddy in Oran) that is Susan Slyomovics any more than I already did. How much better would the academy be, would the world be, if there were more Susans?

Absolutely delighted to see all of Oliver O'Hanlon’s hard work pay off in his successful thesis defence today. Great to see real engagement from the examiners and top class chairing from AODH QUINLIVAN ⚽️🏆. Looking forward to a celebratory pint with you in Cork soon Oliver!

Many of our academic colleagues defended the idea that we should boycott Russian universities but not Israeli ones on the grounds that the latter supposedly allow dissent. That is very evidently wrong.

Columbia, I arrived in New York with a fellowship from you and a hundred and ten dollars borrowed from kind friends in Kolkata to study with Edward Said. It turns out you're still King's College, for empire, for apartheid, for police brutality against your brave students.

A great time to remember SDS’ “Who Rules Columbia” pamphlet, an amazing power research project initiated during the 1968 Columbia occupation/uprising. More here: littlesis.org/news/who-rules…

My campus, my neighborhood- Columbia under police control today - sacrificing everything a university stands for to satisfy a bunch of right wing politicians.

I have always loved that in Arabic a campus is called: حرم الجامعة [the sanctuary of the university]. It is sacral. That is what Shafik violated today.

Disappointment but no specific critique of the American veto. What does it take for the Irish government to criticise America’s complicity?

As expected, students have been galvanized by Columbia University's crackdown on peaceful protesters. Hundreds have rushed to take the place of their classmates who were arrested on the East Lawn and have now taken over the West Lawn.

Columbia when it gave tenure to Edward Said embraced his postcolonial critique of texts. Columbia today, when students are applying the postcolonial critique to real world live events? Not so much.

I have been conducting research about the 1968 Columbia protests for such a long time, but I honestly do not know what to say right now. Except, perhaps, that student movements have been one of the most progressive, courageous political avantgardes of the past century

Had a great evening at the new exhibition at EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum ‘Look Back to Look Forward: 50 Years of the Irish in Britain’. A rich mix of social, cultural + political history with lots of oral histories. Especially nice to catch up with curator and old EUI comrade Rosa!

Have been reading this over the last few days and it is so good. Such a rich cultural, social, political, and gender history of the wartime labour of Indians in World War One. A really rich contribution to First World War historiography and very well written too.
