The Summer Seminars in Neuroscience and Philosophy (SSNAP) is one of my favorite events of the year. This year would have been our 7th iteration, but we had to cancel it in 2020 and then make it virtual in 2021. This year we were back in person. And it was a amazing (1/n)

My first in-person VSS was a lot of fun! If you missed my poster in person, I'm presenting it again at V-VSS now! Come by to hear about how feature working memory can benefit from meaningful stimuli!

Abstracts for the Working Memory Symposium (wmsymposium.org) are due tomorrow (6/1)!

Just one stream of talks – given only by early-career researchers – with a friendly community. What more could you want?

(The submission link was down earlier but is now restored!)

I think these results point to some fascinating future directions. Will this pattern hold in spatial attention, or in auditory attention? What neural mechanisms are or aren't shared by these sources of control? I hope that I and others can address these questions soon!

These results have implications for how to train people to attend to task-relevant features - explicit instructions seem best - and ignore potential distractions - maybe incidental practice at ignoring is better than explicit instructions.

...suggesting that the use of working memory to attend towards a feature is particularly beneficial, including when compared to an equally informative target learning condition.

This is consistent with the 'working memory' account of why distractor ignoring is sometimes ineffective. Also consistent with this account is that voluntary target attention was by far more effective than the other sources of control, ...

And that is what we found! Target cues had a 155ms benefit when accurate vs. inaccurate, compared to only 24ms for distractor cues. This difference was almost absent for learned attention, with a 78ms benefit for target learning and a 56ms benefit for distractor learning.
