Reminiscent of Hitler’s blitz, the Iranian drone strikes provide Putin negligible military gains. More likely to galvanize Ukrainian will than break them. Also not likely to make Iran any friends among trade partners. nytimes.com/live/2022/10/1…

I’d hope to get in on that action with my own book, only unlike what we wrote, believe the requirement for books like Kushner’s is “a soulless account that reminds one of licking eye goo from a cat.” We don’t measure up.

Perception will be more influential than whatever the truth on the fires at Evin prison is and conjure long memories of a similar event under the Shah that accelerated his downfall.

Prisoners’ families aren’t the only ones terrified. Khameini & the IRGC calculating if a bloody crackdown now rolls back the protests’ momentum, or further ignites it beyond control.

Need an unclass version. And there needs to be accountability. A lot of us suffered due to actions of individuals in sr positions. Who denied us health care. This delay, per Walter Reed sr docs, led to serious degrading health conditions. This was a massive failure of leadership.

Told Reuters:

'The one striking similarity have w/1979 is the mood on the streets, which is revolutionary. They don't want reform, they want regime change. It could be weeks, months or years... But the Iranian people have made up their mind”reuters.com/world/middle-e…

An Air Force chief for a war in which Russian aviation a non factor might say more about internal politics. Gen Dvornikov had a bloody Syrian resume-didn’t last long. No Russian general has the experience/tools to fight this war but the AF less a threat to Putin than the army.

Ukrainian threat to Russian control of Crimea the breaking point where Putin decides tactical nukes or chem make both military & political sense. Putin can lose Donetsk/Luhansk & survive. Less likely he withstands political fallout losing Crimea.

Khameini/IRGC decide what’s next-the fmr focus is legacy/the latter power & profit. Bloody but Khameini (relatively) restrained. If protests incl police/mil & attack Basij (IRGC affiliated) the IRGC has most to lose. Will IRGC crackdown end protests or be their own end?

Saudi oil policy was never driven by economic interests alone.

Pre-MBS, production decisions resulted from an optimization exercise; balancing between revenue targets (economic interests) and entreaties of Riyadh’s western security guarantors (national security interests).

Now Prime Minister to protect himself from prosecution; wielding Saudi $ & manipulating energy to help the GOP-ideally Trump-win in ‘24 and swell his coffers for Vision 2030, it’s time the US use its leverage. Russia/China will not defend KSA from Iran or offer the tech he needs.
