New day, new #Squidtember post! Today let’s look at gonatus onyx. Also known as the Clawed armhook squid. One of the few squid species known to brood there eggs. This female seen here is carrying a sheet of eggs in her arms.

I sometimes see people describe giant squids as cryptids or claim that we didn't have proof of them until the 2000s. This isn't true. While we first photographed them alive and in situ in the 2000s, we've had dead specimens for a long time. The giant squid was described in 1857!

Totally tubular! Sea cucumbers, members of the echinoderm group, play an important role in recycling nutrients. @noaaoceanexploration calls them the vacuum cleaners of the deep, because “they eat their way along the seafloor, separating the organic matter from the inedible”.
