UCT School of Economics affirms that Black Lives matter. Let’s not make the mistake of thinking that just because George Floyd lived and died elsewhere, he’s someone else’s justice problem. Accidents of birth should not disqualify anyone from our commitment to justice.

Lest we think the assault on black lives is just a problem in the US, let’s not forget that under lockdown in our own country, Collins Khosa, Petrus Miggels, Sibusiso Amos and Adane Emmanuel have also lost their lives to acts of police brutality.

The anguish of George Floyd’s last words - “I can’t breathe” - reflect the lived reality for black lives in our City and around the world, and these words should ring in our ears and move us to action.

The School of Economics is saddened by the passing of George Bizos. As we face a deepening crisis of poverty and inequality, his unwavering commitment to justice and human rights inspires us in our work towards economic justice for all.

The School of Economics, under the auspices of the New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP), is seeking to make two permanent appointments of black South Africans at the Lecturer level in the fields of Economic Development and in Experimental & Behavioural Economics.
