Important to keep in mind as the Supreme Court hears Sackett v. EPA. Are property rights sacrosanct even when they harm others' property rights? This study shows the flood damage to others' properties -- up to 40 miles away -- when a wetland is allowed to be developed.

Giving rivers access to their floodplains IS flood protection. Calif. is recognizing the truth of that old adage: there are 2 kinds of levees -- those that have failed and those that will fail. by Kathleen Ronayne @ap

As droughts reveal long-subsumed relics, we see Europe also flooded its history, just as Turkey, China, etc, raising hue & cry. Yet I still mourn charming, 12,000-yr-old Hasankeyf, Turkey, flooded by Ilusu Dam in 2020. by Derrick Bryson Taylor The New York Times nytimes.com/2022/09/22/wor…

Water wants the return of its 'slow phase'. We've filled in or drained 87% of wetland waters, our pavement amounts have drastically increased, and now water can't move as slow as it used to per Erica Gies / SlowWater.World. This is important for biodiversity, carbon storage, and water storage.

There's different levels of community engagements with wetlands. Laura Paskus points out that 'us first' stances haven't helped us in the longterm. Erica Gies / SlowWater.World calls these single-minded approaches, ignoring the wider ecosystems water exists in, leading to unintended consequences.

Appreciate that Erica Gies / SlowWater.World calls out the 'colonial footprint' in changing water management from observation of water flows and adapting to it to Europeans asserting their way of doing things on top of new-to-them local landscapes they did not really understand.
