When bull #kelp washes ashore, it becomes a food source for beach-dwelling species like sand hoppers and other invertebrates, which are then preyed upon by shorebirds and other animals. A perfect reminder that there is no waste in nature ♻️ 📸: Gretchen Kay Stuart | #oregon

☀️🐟 Another ocean sunfish (Mola mola) has washed ashore in Oregon this year. As large, slow-moving predators, they primarily feed on jellyfish, helping to control jellyfish populations and maintain balance in the marine food web. kptv.com/2024/08/20/oce… #mola #sunfish #oregon

🥺 What may have been the last wild #seaotter in #Oregon was killed in 1910 by a hunter south of Port Orford. The pelt was valued at $500. Since then, sea otters have been locally extinct along Oregon's coastline. 📷: Illustration from West Shore magazine | #pnw #ocean #furtrade

#Seaotters are key to the health of #kelpforests. By munching on sea urchins, these playful creatures help prevent overgrazing, allowing bull kelp to thrive. 🌊 Together, they form a powerhouse duo, supporting marine biodiversity and fighting #climatechange. 📸: Laura Tesler

Beneath those spiky exteriors, #seaurchins have something extraordinary— a specialized mouth called “Aristotle’s Lantern!" With five sharp, tooth-like plates, it allows these creatures to graze on algae along the seafloor. 🌿 📸: Gretchen Kay Stuart
