We haven’t seen a corresponding increase in Beijing’s warning rhetoric toward Taiwan, according to our speech index. That suggests this isn’t a response to a specific trigger & it’s instead a decision by Beijing to take its pressure campaign against Taiwan to the next level.

This summer at CDG airport in Paris, I was pushing 2 suitcases and in line for taxi... right behind a Caucasian family with young child. (There was a reasonable distance between us.) Staff asked if it was one car for *all* of us - they thought I was the Asian nanny.

In 2019, Taiwan officials invited Andrew Cuomo and Linda Sun to a banquet during 蔡英文 Tsai Ing-wen's stopover in NYC. Cuomo never saw that invitation. “I already blocked it,” Sun wrote to a PRC official. And on day of banquet, here's Sun protesting against Tsai: nytimes.com/2024/09/03/nyr…

LGBTQ programming is declining globally, but it's on the rise in Asia. There's a surge of productions coming from Taiwan, Thailand, Korea, Japan, and China. Stories have matured beyond simple romance. And they all benefit from high online engagement by fans.

One of the pernicious things about the Linda Sun case, is how she acted as a community liaison for the NY governor's office -- claiming to represent the Asian American voice. The Chinese gov't has shown its ability to co-opt U.S. domestic issues apnews.com/article/linda-…

Meanwhile, in June 2024 China releases a set of guidelines against "diehard" Taiwanese "separatists". Known as the 22 Articles, punishments include death. This triggers a round of discussions here on the safety of *all* Taiwanese living/working in China: dw.com/zh/%E4%B8%AD%E…

This is reminiscent of the case of LEE Ming-Che, a Taiwanese rights worker who spent 5 years in jail in Hunan, China for subversion of state. In 2017 Lee was detained in March, tried in September, and sentenced in November. He returned to Taiwan in 2022. #LeeMingChe

In an interview with LEE in the Liberty Times, Lee spoke of a key difference: strong advocacy for him at the time by civic society had pressured China to be (semi)transparent about process. This here is not the same. LEE worries the well-being of YANG: news.ltn.com.tw/amp/news/polit…

We will continue to update when more information becomes available. To read more about China's political jailing of Taiwanese, see this talk by #LeeMingChe after his return in 2022. He reflects on the importance of advocacy for political prisoners: x.com/emilyywu/statu…

A heavy day here today as news spread of Yang's 9-year sentence in China. Background is that the 2017 jailing of #LeeMingChe is still fresh in our minds. China has continued to step up its aggressive measures towards Taiwan (and too many others.)
