The ADHD urge to overcommit because of time blindness... In the moment, the future always feels full of infinite time for my latest obsession.

Hey, just a reminder that you can follow me on other platforms instead of this one. Same username pretty much everywhere. 👋😅

Need that “huge project I’ve been avoiding for months is due in 3 hours and I haven’t even started yet” energy on tap. I’d be unstoppable.

One of the biggest enigmas of ADHD is how quickly your brain can get overwhelmed with the idea of work. All of the possibilities collected into one massive, undoable task. It makes everything and anything feel impossible to even start.

What’s the best thing a teacher did to help you with your ADHD (diagnosed or not)? One math teacher let me skip repetitive homework/schoolwork if I kept my test/quiz grades high (I did). Then she gave me challenging math puzzles to work on in class which made me love math again.

Before I knew about my ADHD, people constantly asked (often in exasperation) why I thought or acted the way I did. They couldn’t accept that I didn’t know either, so I gave random answers to see what was acceptable enough. You lie to survive, but don’t know why.

The ADHD urge to start working on new interesting things when I get overwhelmed by my current commitments... thus doubling the amount of work I need to do.

One of my big struggles with undiagnosed ADHD was knowing I had a high capacity for achievement, but little evidence of success. Teachers could see it too, with unhelpful notes about not reaching my potential. It always felt like I should be doing more than I was able.

ADHD is begging your brain to do-the-thing and your brain just ignoring you like some apathetic house cat, knocking something important off your shelf for having the audacity to bother it.

What’s your favorite counterintuitive ADHD tip? So much of what works for us is almost the complete opposite of most neurotypical advice. You need to _embrace_ the things that are fun and interesting, not try focus on the hard stuff first.

Sometimes my brain only understands the words someone tells me AFTER I say “what?” and they start to repeat them. Suddenly, I know exactly what they said the first time, and now my brain is actually annoyed to have to hear them say it again. 💀

The weird thing about my social anxiety is I often want to go to a social event—desperately even—but at some point in the process, I just freeze. Usually trying to get out of the car when I arrive, or getting out of the house in the first place. I find myself just sort of stuck.

Hmm, all my dopamine slot machines are coming up empty—I guess I should go to bed. [stays up another two hours refreshing socials/email/etc hoping for something good]
