Lt. (later Capt.) Wm. H. Appleton, 4th USCI, born on this day in 1843 in Chichester, NH. His Medal of Honor citation states he showed "Valiant service in a desperate assault at New Market Heights., Va., inspiring the Union troops by his example of steady courage." #Medalof Honor

Today is National Medal of Honor Day. The Battle of New Market Heights Memorial and Education Association remembers the 16 United States Colored Troops soldiers who received Medals of Honor for their courageous actions at the Battle of New Market Heights on September 29, 1864.

Remembering Medal of Honor recipient 1st Sgt. Alexander Kelly, 6th USCI, born OTD 1840. He, "gallantly seized the [national] colors, which had fallen near the enemy's lines of abatis, raised them and rallied the men at a time of confusion and in a place of the greatest danger."
