I wrote for the Guardian about how Macronism, a political project that served only the ultra rich and the professional class offers us a glimpse into Starmer's future if they continue to open the party to lobbying, consultants and big business. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

The joint failure of New Labour and the Conservatives has produced a backlash against grievances which they wrongly dismiss as populism. Adrian Pabst responds to Keir Starmer's Downing Street speech 👇 buff.ly/474E6CX

There is an actual anti-Democratic coup taking place in France, as President Macron refuses to recognize the results of the snap elections that he himself called. The president is behaving like an autocrat, but you will not read anything about this in the western liberal media

Anglo commentators misunderstanding this quite badly. Macron is using Le Pen/the RN's no confidence vote as a pretext to say an NFP government couldn't work. The aim isn't to let the RN into government, but to create a situation in which both the RN and LFI are beyond the pale.

The constitutional crisis is already here - the longest time France has been without a PM since 1946, a political impasse between three blocs and a President bent on saving his unpopular legacy. A perfect storm. ft.com/content/3ff150… via @ft

Even Macron supporters have had enough of Macron - new poll reveals the President badly miscaculated with his dissolution, and has lost the confidence of his own supporters. The silver lining: Mélenchon fares worse than Macron in the poll. lemonde.fr/en/politics/ar…

Bizarre pro-monarchy mouthpiece in the @ft for the pro-restoration hopeful Charles de Lobkowicz. Shows how deep the constitutional crisis has come that the most eccentric and outdated ideas are taken seriously by the liberal press. ft.com/content/e62979…

With half the sector in serious financial trouble, a sobering analysis of what is to be done. Change of leadership won't be enough though - changes in governance structures are needed so priorities better reflect the needs of staff and students on.ft.com/3MyzBXC

Macron has yet to appoint his next PM, but he's already cherry-picked the next PM's chief of staff. A clear overstepping of his constitutional powers - the permanent coup continues. lemonde.fr/en/politics/ar…

Barnier is a fine choice for Macron. On the right, a perfect eurocrat, he will push for continuity and austerity. Shame the people voted for change in France, but thankfully we will now have more of the same of the Macron régime. Markets will be pleased.

To prevent giving power to a minority government with 180 seats, Macron gives power to a party with 22 seats. LR haven’t missed this opportunity to capitalise on their defeat in the June elections.

I my thoughts on why Barnier’s appointment is good for France - spoiler alert, it's not because his appointment will please the markets (though that is indubitable). In short: it will spell the end of the Republican front and that's positive for democracy open.substack.com/pub/charlesdev…

JDD newspaper reveals that Macron made a secret deal with Le Pen to avoid no confidence vote against his new PM Barnier. As I argued here, this is good for France: it makes clear that Macron prefers Le Pen to social democracy. substack.com/home/post/p-14… lejdd.fr/politique/excl…

Important read in @UnHerd by Thomas Fazi on the convergence between Macronism and LePenism. It was always the natural alliance of the 2024 elections, between liberal and nationalist authoritarians. Time will tell how long this will hold.unherd.com/2024/09/the-un…
