#OTD J.J.R. Macleod was born in 1876. Macleod won the 1923 Nobel Prize for the discovery of insulin, a hormone that helps to regulate sugar levels in our bodies.

You might have seen our earlier post about #insulin. Not only was the man who discovered it born #OTD, but also in 1978 the US announced it could be produced through genetically engineered bacteria to help with medicine production!

#OTD Thomas D. Brock was born in 1926. Brock discovered the bacteria 'Thermus aquaticus', a species which can survive temperatures up tp 70 degrees and is today widely used in reactions to multiply DNA!

#OTD DNA fingerprinting was discovered in 1984. #DidYouKnow everyone (even identical siblings) has a unique fingerprint, but your fingerprint will be more similar to those you are more closely related to.

#OTD in 1904 Ludwig Gross was born. Gross showed that leukemia, a type of blood cancer, could be caused by a virus. There are many ways to define a cancer, but they generally have the hallmarks seen in the picture!
