Keep adding areas to watch in the Atlantic. National Hurricane Center now watching an area of disturbed weather off the Texas coast. Given a low 20% chance of development over the next week. Also watching the 2 other areas out in the tropical Atlantic. It’s heating up 🔥

5 years ago today, Hurricane Dorian reached peaked intensity with 185mph winds, gusts over 220mph, and a minimum central pressure of 910mb. This is the strongest hurricane to ever strike the Bahamas since records began in 1851.

The remnants of Ida also produced several tornadoes, including an intense EF-3 tornado in Mullica Hill, New Jersey. The same storm later produced another tornado rated as an EF-1. This prompted the NWS to issue the first ever Tornado Emergency for NJ and for the Northeast.

One of the most surreal infrared satellite loops ever captured. 5 years ago today: Hurricane Dorian’s infamous stall. It impacted a single land area as a CAT 5 for the longest duration recorded in the Atlantic. Parts of Great Abaco & Grand Bahama were in the eyewall for 22 HOURS!

One of the biggest global weather stories this week is Typhoon #Yagi in the South China Sea, currently at category 3 intensity. It will become a “Super Typhoon” with winds of 150+mph by Thursday. It will impact China’s Leizhou Peninsula & Hainan Island on Friday.

On this day in 2017, category 5 Hurricane Irma was located east of the Leeward Islands and had peak winds of 180mph. At the time, it was the strongest hurricane ever observed in the open Atlantic outside the Gulf of Mexico or the Caribbean, until Dorian in 2019. A buzzsaw!

On this night in 2017, the eye of monster category 5 Hurricane Irma engulfed Barbuda, an island in the Lesser Antilles. In the western eyewall a sustained wind of 118mph, a gust to 155mph, and a pressure of 916mb was measured on the island before the instrument failed.

Incredibly dangerous Super Typhoon #Yagi is nearing Hainan, China with estimated winds of 130kts (150mph). Though it very well could be stronger. Life-threatening conditions will begin soon on the eastern side of the island as the violent eyewall moves onshore.

Radar loop of Super Typhoon #Yagi approaching Hainan, China. Looks like the inner eyewall is starting to erode a bit, with a larger ring of convection surrounding it. Beginning of an Eyewall Replacement Cycle? This could *slightly* lower intensity, hopefully as it makes landfall.

Development odds for all 3 areas of interest in the Atlantic basin have been increased. #Invest91L has an 80% chance of formation in the southwest Gulf of Mexico. At the very least, this will enhance rainfall on the Gulf Coast. Likely to become a depression mid next week.
