If you have an hour a month to help disadvantaged young people access careers in the arts and humanities, please sign up to be a volunteer mentor. It’s one of the most rewarding things you can do, and it may just help to change the status quo!

My colleagues get me. One of them has been cleaning out her parents’ house and has brought me a number of ‘weird and wonderful’ artefacts - including this beautiful copy of Keble’s edition of Richard Hooker’s Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity and a Vulgate bound in half-leather.

‘What to look for outside a church’, obvs. We should reprint these (and its companion ‘What to look for inside a church’) in large numbers and stock them in every church in the land.

Remember William Warham, my favourite Archbishop of Canterbury, who died on this day in 1532, just in time to avoid the wrath of Henry VIII. One day I will write the magisterial doorstop of a biography he deserves. (No one has done it yet. Why?!)

Every time a consider that St Thomas Aquinas wrote a corpus of 8 million words* before the age of 50, I feel inadequate. Every time I consider that he did so entirely without coffee, I’m flabbergasted. * - conservative estimate

I first wrote this on the back of a student's paper, and two weeks later he turned in a paper about an issue he really cared about. It earned an A.

Deeply embroiled this evening in writing about the finer points of the 1531 Submission of the Clergy, and heartily wishing Cardiff still offered its MA in Canon Law.
