βI feel strongly that thereβs way too much gatekeeping in music. Copyright sucks. Art is a conversation with everyone thatβs come before us. Intertwining it with the ego is a modern concept. The music industry has been defined by lawyers, and that strangles creativityβ π¦ππππΎπ β³
βWhy shouldnβt people be able to use my voice? Something cool and beautiful might come from it.β π¦ππππΎπ β³ on her AI collaboration offer. βI think this might be one of the coolest times to be an artist ever. Weβre just at the start of the internet.β
βI think itβs good to have consent [from artists before using their voices via AI]β, says π¦ππππΎπ β³. She wants to lobby platforms like Spotify to start AI sections for generated artist tracks alongside their βownβ tracks.
On the subject of generating AI music from deceased artists, βIf I was dead Iβd really like people to do it,β says π¦ππππΎπ β³. βBut Iβm not sure everyone would agree. I feel like maybe Prince wouldβve been up for it. If it was one of his friends doing it maybe. Itβs a tricky one.β
βi think everything about copyright is problematic. Thereβs too much top down control. In the early days of TikTok there was a lot of weird music going viral, but now the gatekeeping stranglehold means less interesting stuff coming out.β π¦ππππΎπ β³
βThe reason AI models do evil things is because their training data is full of evil things. [in fiction and movies] the amount of discourse about evil AI completely overshadows the case for good AI. thatβs not healthy; we need to avoid a self-fulfilling prophecy,β π¦ππππΎπ β³
βI like collaborating with people who really care about pushing the boundaries of audio.β Says π¦ππππΎπ β³ βI worked alone for ten years, not even with engineers. Though I donβt know what I was so militant about that, it seems crazy now.β
βWeβre really forcing [musical collaborator] Tale Of Us Mateo to engage with pop music, β says π¦ππππΎπ β³, βitβs like, βcould we have a chord somewhere, not just a bass and a kick?ββ
βIβve had people saying βyour baby daddy invaded Bolivia for lithium,β says π¦ππππΎπ β³. βIβve been cancelled so many times - Iβm not sure it can get worse than saying I support war crimes.β
βIf you choose to become an artist. You have no control over what other people perceive of you. Anything in the public eye is judged.β π¦ππππΎπ β³ then quotes Taylor Swift: βpeople throw rocks at things that shine.β
βI kindβve like the patriarchy. I like the supply chain, food, roads, the good things that came from it. Itβs oppressive and overly dominant, and if you donβt include women it can become toxic, but letβs build our own new institutionsβ says π¦ππππΎπ β³
βI feel like we need to stop attacking the things that we donβt like and start building things that we do like,β says π¦ππππΎπ β³
βI have really crazy stage fright: touring was really hard on me psychologically. Iβm in a state of sheer terror on stage. Itβs the singing I hate. Iβm not a very good singer! I love DJing, I like building stuff over performing live.β π¦ππππΎπ β³
βI feel like our culture is really alienated from children. Itβs so much easier to realise how great humans are when you see the human mind untainted from all the things that fuck us up. Seeing my kids with their friends is a really inspiring thing.β π¦ππππΎπ β³
A book recommendation from π¦ππππΎπ β³: βSurface Detailβ by Ian Banks, her favourite sci-fi novel. Though she is slightly spoiling the plot right now, if you want to understand her vision of the future, it sounds like itβs worth reading. IMS Ibiza Book Club strikes again today.
βI always say to my manager: βI want to make hieroglyphics,ββ says π¦ππππΎπ β³. βI donβt care if people remember my name, but I want to be able to meaningfully contribute to this culture at a time of great change.β
βThereβs this idea that we can eliminate pain, and that can be a disincentive for trying to make the world better. We shouldnβt aim for utopia, but a world where suffering is reduced and everyone has opportunity. But itβs sick to have something to fight againstβ π¦ππππΎπ β³
And as π¦ππππΎπ β³ signs off, the βtalkieβ part of IMS Ibiza 2023 draws to a close. The industry came together to Face The Future, and in the short term that means a poolside boogie at the Mixmag lab with sashaofficial b2b ANNA, and the big Dalt Vila party tonight.
IMS Dalt Vila 2023, what a night! Presented by AlphaTheta/Pioneer DJ Global and YouTube, the incredible seven-hour celebration marked the grand finale of IMS Ibiza and kicked off the summer season on the island. Track ID: ANNA & sashaofficial 'In Between Clouds'.
