IMO a postdoc should not last longer than 4 years. If a PD still wants to stays after that for any reason, a promotion to a permanent position or Instructor position should be on the table to allow for career progression.

Starting next week, my lab will have 5 staff members. Because no one wants to be a postdoc anymore, this is the new way to do science. It’s not the same but I think it’ll do. At least in the short term.
