New study with Nils Bienzeisler. Based on experiments in three controversies, we show that an attitudinal polarization of trust in science can be mitigated when scientists adopt the styles of honest brokers versus that of epistocrats when giving public policy advice, i.e.... (1/2).
In Issues in Science and Technology, Emily Howell Science Communication Lab & I reflect on the Societal Experts Action Network (SEAN) that united funders, academics, & community leaders during the pandemic. Thank you to K. L. Akerlof for the invitation to speak on Mon w/a bright group of @georgemasonU grad students about the need to approach research & action on #misinformation w/nuance re: conceptualization, operationalization, & goals. The Q&A was fantastic!🎉
If you missed UW-Madison LSC talk by Nicky Krause on how anti-science discourse limits research and action on science polarization, it is available online! Check it out! lsc.wisc.edu/2024/01/24/lsc…
Thanks UW-Madison LSC for inviting me to speak at the colloquium today! I appreciated the thoughtful questions & the discussion about #polarization as it relates to #science and #scicomm . Plus, after attending this series many times as a student, it was fun to be on the other side :)
'[F]ellows will develop and empirically evaluate real-world strategies for public engagement ... experimenting with new evidence-based approaches in #scicomm and community engagement.' Join a great team of students, faculty, and fellows at Morgridge Institute: morgridge.org/job-posting/ci…
Excited to start my new research position here at UW–Madison, working with such a talented crew to understand and address #polarization related to science. Big thanks to John Templeton Foundation and to my colleagues in UW-Madison LSC!
LSC Professor dietram a. scheufele and LSC Assistant Professor Kaiping Chen are featured in the The Capital Times latest article discussing the challenges #AI is creating for #journalism and the increasing importance of media literacy for news consumers. captimes.com/news/education…

'There will be two Rita Allen Civic Science Fellows at the Morgridge Institute ... focusing on evidence-based approaches to communicating about science in polarized political or information environments.' Deadline for applications: 9/15/2023. morgridge.org/job-posting/ci… #scicomm #scipol
Huge congrats to our UW-Madison LSC colleague Kaiping Chen for having her work recognized at #aejmc23 .
I recently had the chance to speak with the Darts and Letters podcast about the complexities of research and action on #misinformation in the context of #scicomm (starting at around 35:30 in this episode). Thanks, Gordon Katic, for the invitation! It was fun.
' #misinformation and #polarization problems are often more nuanced than we make them out to be' - Dallas Morning News op-ed with Nicky Krause about our research w/dietram a. scheufele & dominique brossard on anxiety, partisanship, & (mis)info surrounding #COVID . #scicomm #scipol

Had a great time today at #APS2023 , first speaking w/Holden Thorp, dormant account & joepalca about #misinformation & #scicomm , and then discussing scientific uncertainty & trust in science as part of a science educators' workshop. Thank you, APS, for the invitation! 🎉
Trying to fight #misinformation , many focus on facts and correct others. “ #Corrections … are unlikely to be successful when they are only about facts.” We (w/J. Matthes) found that those who correct others anyways get angrier over time. Might be related to nonsuccess.

Excited to see work with Nicky Krause, Isabelle Freiling and Becca Beets in this volume, discussing fact checking, #misinformation and #riskcomm !
