Devastated by the sudden loss of dear friend and World Health Organization (WHO) colleague Aidan Oā€™Leary. Aidan was a tremendous humanitarian and an extraordinary leader in the fight to @EndPolio. More importantly he was a special human and friend. Myā¤ļøcondolences and prayers to his family and loved ones.

As a mother myself, I understand how welcoming a newborn can come with numerous questions and concerns, including about breastfeeding. I hope this guidance from an expert from Nepal will help new parents give their baby the best possible start in life: uni.cf/3NfYxV1

Breastmilk is a childā€™s first vaccine, first food and offers babies a robust line of defense against infection and malnutrition. Initiation of breastfeeding within the 1st hour of birth alone can save the lives of 200,000 newborns per year in South Asia.

It was lovely to meet 8-month-old Azizullah at a UNICEF Afghanistan-supported health facility in #Afghanistan. When he arrived he was severely malnourished but now he is recovering well. It's thanks to support from World Bank & Asian Development Bank that we're able to help children like Azizullah.

"With an event like the 2022 floods in Pakistan, we could expect to see an 18% increase in the prevalence of child marriage, which could erase 5 years of progress." bit.ly/4aUzjEp Climate change is impacting almost every aspect of childrenā€™s health & well-being.

South Asia has made incredible progress in increasing the number of children being exclusively breastfed. However, we must ensure that no one is left behind, especially the most vulnerable mothers who may need additional support, to reduce breastfeeding inequalities.

I was thrilled to see this green transformation at the Women and Children's Hospital Rajjar in Charsadda district in Pakistan. This shouldn't just be a model, this should be the norm for every child, for every woman, not just in Pakistan but the whole of South Asia.

You can take the girl out of Liverpool, but you canā€™t take Liverpool out of the girl! Great to have a kick around outside a Child Friendly Space at a health centre in eastern #Afghanistan. These spaces offer a safe & happy place for children whose family members are being treated

Itā€™s one thing after another for children in Bangladesh šŸ˜¢. Flash floods have washed away homes. Children need to feel safe. We need shelter, social workers for mental health support, nutrition & water purification tabs. UNICEF Bangladesh is on the ground. Emma Brighamā€™s report šŸ‘‡šŸ¼

15-year-old Aarti from India is a changemaker. She teaches girls in her community about the importance of menstrual hygiene. If we stand with girls like Aarti and invest in their futures, they can lead and inspire younger generations just as they inspire us today.

This monsoon has been devastating for the people of eastern Bangladesh. Children have lost their families, homes, schools, and are in desperate need of food, clean water, safe toilets and emergency relief supplies. UNICEF Bangladesh is doing everything possible but much more is needed.

Millions of children in South Asia are at risk of Human Papilloma Virus ā€“ a preventable disease. This is why we need to educate children and families about this disease, along with increasing investments in vaccines. We can all do our part to stop the spread of this disease.

The floods in Bangladesh are the worst that the eastern part of the country has seen in 34 years. They come close on the heels of the floods in north Bangladesh & Cyclone Remal in May. My colleague Deepika reports from Noakhali about needs on the ground.

Childrenā€™s immune systems are weaker than that of adults. When exposed to polluted air, they're at greater risk of infections like pneumonia. Given the high levels of air pollution in South Asia, itā€™s critical to prioritize their health in climate policy, investment & action.

Education is every childā€™s right. It allows girls and boys to develop cognitive skills to survive and thrive, make good decisions, and keeps doors open for a better future. UNICEF will never stop advocating for all children, including girls, to be in school and learning.

Weā€™re very proud that UNICEF's digital application Oky is the winner of the SDG Digital GameChanger Award 2024. Weā€™re especially proud of our co-creators, the adolescent girls. They are the real force in bridging the gender divide and breaking taboos around menstruation.
