Conditional cash transfers have been proven to be an effective way to increase coverage for low-income populations in other health areas.

However, the studies reviewed did not assess outcomes by socio-economic status.

This was a missed opportunity.

Given the lack of evidence and potential unintended consequences, we are puzzled by the widespread practice of giving incentives for COVID-19 vaccines.

Where there is evidence that programs work, we don't understand why or whom.

No studies looked at cost-effectiveness.

In a new study, we explore the use of cash and non-cash incentives to improve adult vaccination coverage.

At the population level, most were not effective.

Where effective, they improved coverage by a few percentage points at best.

💥Uganda announced trials of new Ebola vaccines will begin in early November and take at least a month to evaluate.

The outbreak is growing with 109 cases and 30 deaths confirmed (including 6 health workers).

Tomorrow, a Cultural Medallion will be dedicated in honor of activist and author Larry Kramer, who died in 2020.

A list of incredible speakers (including my big brother Will Schwalbe) will share stories about how Larry fought to change history.

And won.

Why is gender such a big deal for COVID-19?

The extreme burden on women during the pandemic has made them disproportionally affected besides and beyond the epidemiology.

Thanks to Terry Martin Terry Martin and DW News for asking the question.

How do we combat future pandemics?

Against a backdrop of waning engagement, we need a system to build resilience against future pandemics overseen by heads of government to ensure accountability.

Thanks to Andrew Jack and the Financial Times for asking the question.

Humbled to have met WHO's Dr. Janet Diaz.

Janet V. Diaz led a weekly COVID-19 working group that brought together researchers and clinicians from around the world to share information, practices and experiences.

She deserves a 🏅 for her work and the lives she helped save.

🔥More worrying news on the Uganda Ebola outbreak

According to WHO, 8 recently reported cases had no known links with known patients.

Available vaccines aren't effective against the species of Ebola circulating there.

Trials of new vaccines are only just starting.

Haiti, Syria, Lebanon and Malawi are among 29 countries with outbreaks this year.

An ↑ from previous years.

In response to vaccine shortages, WHO now recommends 1 instead of 2 doses.

This spreads supply, although protection wanes faster.
