On Sunday, it felt like Christmas in Hollis as my office partnered up with the legendary Darryl McDaniels of RUN DMC to give away free backpacks and school supplies. Being able to give back to the community that raised us is why we each do what we do. And will always do.

IS 145, a beloved neighborhood school in Jackson Heights, is bringing all its 6th-grade classes into compliance with the state class size law this year. Each class will be 23 students, down from 30. “It’s a blueprint of what we should be doing,” says ⁦Queens Borough President Donovan Richards⁩.

As the parent of an elementary school student, I want my son to have as much individualized attention in the classroom as possible. As Borough President, I want the same for all of our kids. The work done at IS 145 to reduce class size truly is a model our city needs to follow.
