Until the early 2000s, a number of night trains made their early morning arrival into #Brussels🇧🇪 - some of them seasonal, some daily, and many of them travelling via the Ardennes line with its steep gradients, requiring haulage by the powerful Class 20. Pictured is one of these.

Perusing a 133-yr old railway timetable, as you do, I have been disabused of my belief that being able to travel direct from Charlton to north London is an exciting, modern innovation. Turns out even in the 1890s I could have gone straight through the, ahem, Thameslink Core.

I walked 10 min from my apartment in Katowice to the train station and I’m taking a train that’ll take me to downtown Warsaw (180 mi, like Seattle to Portland) in 2h for $35 in peace and quiet. I love America but the lack of trains and high speed rail is such a miss.
