In a new paper (with Justin Grimmer), "How Election Rules Affect Who Wins," we offer a solution to a puzzle: despite widespread concern that election laws will tip the partisan balance in elections, scholarly research shows they have small effects. Link: eitanhersh.com/uploads/7/9/7/…

Between 2005 and 2021, average rents in #CambridgeMA rose by 83%. It has the highest rents of any population center in MA. This is the product of political decisions to limit the supply of affordable and market-rate housing as the local economy boomed.

Out today in #OpenAccess, my paper with Ada Johnson-Kanu and Melissa Sands that tells the story of South African electoral and party politics post #Marikana. A brief thread about Marikana, our findings, and our discipline. bit.ly/3rkHUPH

I had the pleasure of talking about my research on corporate political messaging on Science of Politics with Matt Grossmann. (Mostly, you should tune in for what the inimitable Eitan Hersh has to say, but stick around for the second half if you can)

Disappointed to see that Ashoka University has thrown a junior academic under the bus. Good luck to the university trying to build a world class faculty. If tomorrow the same paper is accepted at a top journal will they tout its findings? Bad news for social science in India.

"Harvard Last in Free Speech? Don't Trust FIRE's Rankings: The methodology is arbitrary and misleading" - my piece in the The Chronicle of Higher Education where I examine the methodology behind FIRE's college free speech rankings and find it lacking. chronicle.com/article/harvar…

Since the rankings are out again, apparently with the same methodology, I am reposting my criticism of this exercise. Protecting free speech is a great idea. Arbitrary rankings are not. chronicle.com/article/harvar…

Trying to stay off of Twitter, but just throwing out there that in my undergrad course, the primary assignment is to forecast the election AND I have them read the Grimmer, Knox, and Westwood article because it's important that students know the limitations in what they are doing
