What a success story! Mangroves have been declining worldwide for decades, but Pakistan has expanded its mangroves from 48,331 hectares in 1986 to 143,930 hectares in 2020.

The benefits?
🐟 Healthier fish stocks
🌊 More climate resilience
🍃 CO2 storage

Preparing for COP29 in Azerbaijan? You can use the same playbook. Once again, the critical climate negotiations will be led by an oil boss from a petrostate, no doubt producing decision text littered with loopholes for polluters.

The text of COP agreements is always lawyerly, but by any objective accounting, the final text of COP28 is weak with few meaningful decisions. 🧵

Some more thoughts on the outcome, speaking as a report lead author...

First, three important context:
1. Every single word and comma in the GST had to be agreed upon by delegations from 199 countries. A single country could block or object to any one word.

This conclusion is historic and insufficient. Historic because we finally have a global agreement naming fossil fuels as the problem and the source of the climate crisis and despite the oil lobby we held onto science based targets. Insufficient? You can read what the text…

text gavelled through. My reaction: 👇

COP28 has spotlighted that while the world’s appetite for climate action has moved significantly forward, its willingness to pay lags behind.
