Challengers falls flat. It’s as if the real heat and thrust in a bloated, jumbled narrative is tiptoeing around a relatively limp pivot rather than being the focal point. Seen at Queen's Film Theatre.

Finally watched Charlotte Wells’ Aftersun last night - it’s an intensely affecting and masterfully acted work.

Rye Lane is even better on a second viewing. It simply pops with energy, invention and thoughtfulness, and the central couple truly click.

Groundhog Day has that gift of sublime tonal transition that the equally outstanding Planes, Trains and Automobiles has - the frequent and loud laughs gradually and organically set up and lead into strong central character development and genuine poignancy.

My latest viewing of Groundhog Day reminded me just how taut and richly visual Harold Ramis’s direction was. His focus on the little details within such an economic length and scope has helped the film to endure like it has.

My next theatre review will be of Jaki McCarrick's Belfast Girls, which concludes its sold out run at Lyric Theatre Belfast tomorrow before touring. For those about to see the Anna Simpson-directed @AnTain production, you'll be treated to intricate writing and forceful performances.

Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers is a beautiful piece of work, perhaps his finest since About Schmidt in its sharp observations, poignant performances and sensitive scripting. Seen at The Avenue Cinema.

Absolutely trembling after my second full viewing of West Side Story ‘21. I continue to be staggered by the boldness, sensitivity and visual transcendence in this interpretation.

Just out of Bruiser Theatre Company’s #Teechers at The MAC. It’s pretty electric.

The choral cover of Hozier’s “Nina Cried Power” in The Full Monty TV series is quite tremendous.
