🦋 A Farming in Protected Landscapes #FiPL grant is helping increase Duke of Burgundy butterfly sites in the Chilterns. The landowner, Chiltern Rangers & BC Upper Thames will improve scrub habitat & ensure there are plenty of cowslips – the foodplant of the caterpillars. 🐛🌼

I took this picture in my garden (Berks/Oxon border) back in 2015. As far as I can recall, I haven't seen Small Tortoiseshell in the garden since and have seen very few while out and about in the UTB area. Are other other people having more luck ? BC Upper Thames

Red Admiral with stunning underwing, never seen the like before. Do the colours change depending on direction of light? Top photos, same butterfly, different angles. 25.8.2024. Homefield Wood. BBO Wildlife Trust Butterfly Conservation 🦋 BC Upper Thames

A Long-tailed Blue seen during my weekly transect on West Wycombe hill on Sunday 25 August. A wonderful surprise. Only the 7th recorded in our BC region but 3 of those were 2024. This special sighting of a wall brown butterfly was sent to us by one of our volunteer surveyors on her Greenham Common butterfly transect! 🦋 The species is now incredibly rare in our three counties, having largely retreated to the coast over the last few decades.
