Record-shattering 46.7°C in Sacramento CA beat the previous record of 43.3°C by a large margin. Note the long observations since 1877.

Want to work with us on the next set of climate scenarios, on impacts of climate change and extremes on energy and biodiversity? Data science/ML, uncertainty, emergent constraints and policy implications?

We are hiring several (senior) postdocs!

I wrote a thing about 'a heatwave that never was' in light of last month's heatwave in the UK njleach.github.io/2022/08/24/The…. This is part meteorological curiosity, part a serious point about making use of the 'best' models to assess the risks from extreme weather. Thread 1/11

For in the European Alps, 2022 continues to be the 'perfect storm' - hot and dry. Previous record levels have been shattered at many of our sites already and melting goes on. We're far beyond historical variability.

in Europe is on course to be the worst in 500 years.

That’s according to a senior scientist at the European Drought Observatory.

So, why is this happening now and what are the consequences? 🧵

Erich Fischer and his colleagues Sebastian Sippel and Reto Knutti projected that, in the coming decades, climate extremes will break previous records by wide margins. “This is exactly what we’ve been seeing,” he says nature.com/articles/d4158…
