Music folks: I'm looking for someone to do some paid typesetting/engraving work in the next few weeks. It's not particularly complicated, just beyond my own abilities - and it needs to look super neat as it's for a journal article. Please DM me if you're available and interested!

It's mental that in Latin (and Greek?) poetic diction you can basically make up as many names for the gods as you want based on where they had a famous temple; it's like calling St Paul 'Londonicus' or St Edmund 'Buricus'

I get into this debate often with white environmentalists. They always cough up: “it’s wisdom because they’ve been doing x for thousands of years!” It boggles my mind everytime. It’s the kind of crass, natives-are-magic exoticism that scholars would have balked at a decade ago.

My new piece for The Critic , viewing the closure of the music department at Oxford Brookes in the context of wider tendencies in UK Music HE over recent decades.

If you write prose inspired by modernism or postmodernism, it is a grave error not to have read much of the 19th- and 18th-century prose-fiction canons: to understand what you are rebelling against with your 20th-century forebears.

Actually, it’s the other way around: people who talk against standards care less about academics than about looking “compassionate” to the right people and being the Mean Girls Cool Mom. I think it’s more compassionate not to set people and programs up for failure.

Schools' and universities' role is to fight against this development with all their pith and marrow, not to 'embrace new technologies' in the name of 'workplace readiness'.
