Yesterday I did a wonderful 9.5 mile walk from Dulverton on Exmoor, exploring the Barle Valley. However parts of it were spoiled by the exclusionary nature of much of the route. This is my Right to Roam thread. Thanks to Jon Moses Guy Shrubsole for inspiring it!

Can you help me find individual-level population studies of reptiles? Analogous to nestbox studies, with marked individuals. The kind of study that might appear in Reproductive Success (1988, ed. Clutton Brock) if the section headings didn't leap from 'Amphibians' to 'Birds'.

"The best solution to handle missing data is to have none" is an appealing quote attributed by various authors to R. A. Fisher. However, none I've seen provide a source, so does anyone know where he wrote/said this?

Spot on. Went into some ‘foreign’ restaurant the other day and no one was using cutlery. Absolutely disgusting. McDonald’s I think it was called.

Burn, Beck, Brook, Gill, Nant...for various reasons, been revisiting Ben Smith's beautiful maps of regional names for streams in Britain. Esp. interested in the Beck-Brook border: any ideas as to why it follows the line it does? More here: atlasobscura.com/articles/strea…

science functions in spite of our irrationality because different scientists have different biases and (ideally) scrutinize each other’s work; the pursuit of recognition by one’s peers has been a driver of lots of impactful, high quality research

This 600-year-old painting is one of the most mysterious in history. That mirror at the back is just 3 inches wide — yet it reflects the entire room in immense detail. Look closer at it and you'll realize nothing is as it seems… (thread) 🧵

Both Journal of Experimental Biology and Srinivasan have admitted to the many occurrences of duplicated data in his JEB papers (see two examples below). However, according to them, admitting the problem and then saying “original data, analyses and figure plots are not available” is a “correction."

According to Srinivasan et al and Journal of Experimental Biology, readers can rest assured that the instances of identical data reported for different experiments “do not alter the overall results and conclusions of the paper” - even though the conclusions were based on the data that is missing.
