1/5 During the @NYTimes Climate Hub at #COP26 this morning we asked Prof Tim Lenton - Director Global System institute, University of Exeter ‘What is required to create a tipping point within the engineering community to produce safe and just outcomes?’

2/5 His response: "The quick answer is - obviously you want to make sure the standards are changing within the application of engineering, building and so on."

3/5 "It needs to come at the top level and the leading academies are demanding that to be a top engineer you reach a certain standard of awareness and innovation to tackle the climate problem, that would make a big difference, so it’s really about all of those human incentives."

4/5 "Shifting the incentives structure so that a discipline that is profoundly important here, focuses it’s attention on innovation because the backstory is why have we let ourselves get into a ridiculous situation where we haven’t been innovating with societies for decades..."

5/5 "we desperately need to turn that around and need a new flow of innovation to do this great transformation in the next generation and we definitely need engineering for that."

Last year, EWB International and Engineers Without Borders organizations from Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, the Netherlands, the Philippines, UK and USA pulled together to influence change at the highest level of engineering governance.

Together, we called for three core competencies to be universally incorporated into the international benchmark values for engineering graduate attributes and professional competencies hosted by the @WFEO and the International Engineering Alliance (International Energy Agency).

Our input was warmly welcomed as the voice of the future of engineering and the benchmark values have been updated. We’re now working with WFEO to scope out more opportunities where the Engineers Without Borders vision of engineering can become mainstream.
