Rumoured that the PM will today row back on with a load of new oil and gas licences

Reminder that the Conservatives were elected in 2019 on a manifesto that promised “the most ambitious environmental programme of any country on earth'

Do they have a mandate for this?

Here’s my curtain-raiser for what could be a dramatic few days at the Covid inquiry, one which could shine an unforgiving light on Boris Johnson’s government - and perhaps on Rishi Sunak, too.

This is another example of a system deliberately designed to be an ordeal in order to suppress demand. In this case because local authorities are broke.

🇵🇱⚖️Poland doesn't yet have a new parliament in place, let alone a government, but discussions on reforms and restoring the rule of law are already ongoing. I'd like to address one particular element of these conversations which has had me scratching my head. 1/

1/ so they do plan to sell patient data. (& the opt out procedure is complicated

2/ What about letting Palantir having it “for free”. I.e Palantir not charging (because the data IS the prize). Still selling it if the exchange is data for software.

Anglian Water to ban the public from having access to half of the River Cam next to their new sewage works.

Obviously nothing whatsoever to do with stopping all those pesky citizen scientist getting next to it and testing the water quality. 🤔

Just got called a 🤡 by a climate change denier who said that I had no idea where he lived.

Until I pointed out that he had 'Northern Colorado' in his bio, at which point he deleted his post...

Lord have mercy.

If this does happen it would be an utterly senseless decision. The UK still has one of the world's premier financial and cultural mega-cities and two of its premier academic and research hubs. They are less than 90 miles apart and yet it's hugely difficult to travel between them.

1/ Details of the execution-style killings of an entire Ukrainian family of nine people point to Russian soldiers being the culprits. Two or three men are suspected of having carried out the massacre in the occupied town of Volnovakha, Donetsk region. ⬇️

Universal masking, using the optimum type of mask, wearing it appropriately, when in crowded, poorly ventilated spaces, is so sensible - one has to ask why is there so much resistance, especially in healthcare settings? Ask any surgeon why they wear one...

I may be wrong, but I just don’t think prominent Tories should be associating with pro-Putin shills like Ramaswamy.

In the wake of Australia-EU trade negotiations breaking down this article did lead me to wonder why Australia seems to struggle much more than New Zealand with trade deals? Because the latter takes what's on offer and seeks to grow that? lowyinstitute.org/the-interprete…

DANGEROUS Fake news Xsupport xsafety

Not U.K. at all. Not chanting “Kill all Jews”

That seems to be a Mexican flag on the arm of the policeman (assuming it IS a policeman).

This whole thread is tendentious but this is particular nonsense. It hasn't been 2% since the 40s/50s. By far the biggest increase happened under the Thatcher/Major Conservative government not Blair.

Like Tim Jonze, I'm to the left of James O'Brien on some stuff too. But still, I find the tone of this piece baffling. James' is perhaps the most important voice the British Centre Left has: why sneer because he's not your definition of the messiah? theguardian.com/media/2023/oct…
