Have a great weekend all. I managed to do something this week that I've struggled with for way too long. I'm grateful for supportive friends. Too much hate on here lately, so I'm glad to put out some #GratitudeIsKey .

1/3 households in UK living in cold, damp dwellings, affecting children's lungs, mental health & schooling; damaging health of adults Sir Michael Marmot told BBC Radio 4 Today; not seen in colder countries like Sweden & Finland - their homes are fit for purpose bit.ly/3AFsyd6

Leona is a complete legend and our field is lucky to have a psychologist who actually listens and tries to understand nuances. Biggest congrats to Leona Ryan and Prof Jane Walsh - love to see modern technologies applied in this area and I look forward to developing more.

If we allow this to be normalised, we are lost as a nation. Just as we have normalised financially supporting charity/voluntary sector to deliver services. Both are forms of taxes.

Can people who write reports & research articles stop grouping obesity and overweight figures together, especially for childhood obesity. Also be clear on how figures are recorded & calculated. It is nearly impossible to compare like with like across regions/countries. #minirant

Worth repeating: Grateful as we may have been to have NI Executive established again, "It's NOT sufficient to just have government operating. It HAS to be effective."

1/ To be effective, school policies around mobile devices should be co-designed with the pupils. Careful consideration needs to be given to access to devices for: -accessibility (e.g. disabled/ neurodivergent children) -management of health conditions -safety & mental health

Siobhán O'Neill (she/her) And also- let’s back down from these alarmist conversations of social media being the driver of mental health issues - a la Hadit. I heard “research tells us” a number of times this am- no, it doesn’t, it’s much more subtle than that. We ALL need to be critical thinkers.

Banning phones reminds me in my day arguments about banning calculators. No, the evidence re social media and young people's mental health isn't that black and white. We can't ban our way out of a major way we all communicate. We need to work with young people.

Maybe I'm being churlish, but a major conversation about mobile phones in schools.... 🤷 Now can we do school food standards and the quality of schools meals. Let's get as excited about how we nourish our children and young people.

Commentary on smartphone bans frm academics who study the evidence. Little evidence that smartphones have a negative mental health impact & conflicting data on link between social media & mental health. No evidence that bans make a difference-they may even be counterproductive

Priorities? Remember just this summer there was no money to ensure those children who need it most are fed but there IS money for ‘magnetic pouches’ that no one asked for to implement guidance that is basic common sense already employed in most schools 🫣 #PerformativePolitics

Corporate greed, government inaction, disregard for those with less of a voice - a lethal combination. How many more times is this combo waiting to happen? bbc.co.uk/news/live/c623…

This reads like my list to Santa when I was 6...NI Programme for government. Vague, unaccountable and wanting the world without a realistic chance of getting it.
