Plants & their kin telling us about themselves ‘We have a green stem composed of a succession of identical elements, stacked on top of each other. It is this stem that ensures photosynthesis because our leaves are too small. Our sporanges often form spikes’ #MuseumNerdsAbroad

Ok the Botany display at Muséum de Toulouse is a thing of beauty Bold, visually arresting specimens highlighting some of the more ignored biota (when it comes to museum displays) #MuseumNerdsAbroad Jack Ashby

You can stare into the garden of Muséum de Toulouse through a #WallOfSkeletons Fancy a human riding a horse, or a cat attacking an antelope? Both are fab, ‘active’ displays of animal skeletons #MuseumNerdsAbroad Jack Ashby

Omg the nostrils, THE NOSTRILS There is nothing the mata(mata) with this Matamata - Chelus fimbriatus. This turtle creates a low-pressure vacuum - it opens its mouth really wide to suck fish in & then snaps it shut, swallowing it whole #MuseumNerdsAbroad Muséum de Toulouse

I admit it’s bold angle for a giraffe but I want you to focus on the skin folds in the ‘arm’ (or leg) pits Folds! That’s a great taxidermy specimen right there - no over stuffing (sorry Icicle Bear) showing a good understanding of natural wrinkling #MuseumNerdsAbroad

Looking like a Curators flat, the Muséum de Toulouse display of an old school natural history hodge-podge had all the right objects including beautiful slides, model fungi, pickled snakes & a obligatory skull A glass of wine is required for completeness.. #MuseumNerdsAbroad

American Charles Francis Richter developed the Richter scale back in 1935 - a log scale of the increasing amplitude of the largest seismic wave - beautifully shown in these scenes of growing devastation at the Muséum de Toulouse #MuseumNerdsAbroad Jack Ashby
