I find it odd that the same people who complain about NHS costing too much and that too much is spent on managers can still support Tory/Reform’s push to be more like France whereby both cost and admin cost will go up!

Again, as good as French healthcare is, it is better the wealthier you are.

Also interestingly, as decent as French healthcare is (and it is), they are going through reforms to make it “fairer”, as ultimately the sicker you are the more you pay (unless unemployed)

Interestingly, the admin costs (“too many bloody managers in the NHS”) would increase almost 400%.

France spends 3.6%

So, if we wanted to import the partially Social-Insurance, partly private-insurance model of France then we would expect to pay an additional £40bn per year more (not including set up costs).

The additional resource spent does have benefit to health outcomes.

In terms of capital investment (keeping buildings and equipment up to scratch) we would have to increase capital spend by 55%.

This of course all adds up to additional costs…

According to The Health Foundation to achieve similar spending per person in the U.K. we would need to add 21% to the current NHS budget (just for services)

This has led to 95% of the population taking out private insurance.

This is an insurance premium (on top of the social insurance premium) that is in part based on likelihood of needing health care - older people paying more.

Typical costs:

Akin to some other European countries, France uses a social insurance based model predominantly - where employer and employee pay a means-tested insurance premium

but unlike most EU countries the French people pay a surcharge on pretty much everything they access or use

Given some so called patriots want a French healthcare system, let’s take a look at it.
