Tropical Yorkshire?? Today's weather didn't feel that far off! This fossil shell (Chlamys) from Spaunton lived in a shallow tropical sea 165 million years ago. The orange modern shell gives an idea of how vibrant this fossil might have been when alive! #FossilFriday

Fancy a stroll in the park this #FossilFriday? We've posted on the Carboniferous tree in Lister Park before - but this isn't the only one of these impressive fossils in Bradford! This is the Bowling Park stump. Of the famous four this one is in need of the most TLC

Taking advantage of the weather for #fossilfriday to do some field work! One of the best places to find fossils inland are dried up river beds like this one near Kirkbymoorside. The rocks here formed in a shallow Jurassic sea - quite the contrast to the woods & meadows today!

This #FossilFriday we teamed up with The Yorkshire Fossil Hunter to hunt for Carboniferous fossils in the Yorkshire Dales, here's just a taster of what we found. This is the most complete Orthocone we've come across! ... the best is yet to come though, so watch this space!

The Yoredales Series of rocks is rich in brachiopods, bivalves and even trilobites! During last Friday's trip with The Yorkshire Fossil Hunter we found a number of disarticulated trilobite head shields and tails, likely to have been shed carapaces. #TrilobiteTuesday

This may look like ammonites, but it's actually a goniatite. These are the ancient forerunners to ammonites, and they are usually quite small and preserved as crushed impressions in mudstone.  This one from Oldham is huge and preserved in 3D!  #FossilFriday

This may look like a medieval door from a castle ... but surprisingly it is a fossil! This huge monolith is a crushed trunk of the Carboniferous tree Sigillaria from Bacup in Lancashire. It measures over half a metre wide and is on display Manchester Museum. #FossilFriday
