After I was hired out to merchant John Chadwick in Brunswick County, NC, I left and went back to New Bern where my family and friends were. I was caught, and waited a month in jail for Henry Lovick to retrieve me. I called myself JIM HENRY. #blackhistory

**Plantation Goods: A Material History of American Slavery** publishes 2 months from today! This NYC hardware dealer's ad appeared in the leading periodical for Southern slaveholders, who themselves often came north on annual purchasing trips for textiles and tools. 1/7

I ran from W.A. Andrew & Sierau, commission merchants, early in the morning of Sept. 6, 1854, from their offices at 15 Union Street in New Orleans, Louisiana, and hoped to hide. Unfortunately I was caught in the Third District and jailed on Sept. 9. I was called ELIZA.

I ran from farmer William G. Neel of Abbeville District, SC in 1853 on a horse I took. I may have had family in Greenville at Lewis Dickey’s farm, but I may have gone on to freedom in the north. Neel was still searching for me in Sept. 1854, but I was long gone. My name was AMOS.
