#OnThisDay in 1951: Belgium, France, Italy, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands sign the Treaty of Paris, setting up the European Coal and Steel Community for the free movement of coal and steel after WWII. This marks the origin of the EU institutions as we know them today!

The Treaty of Paris, establishing the European Coal and Steel Community was signed 73 years ago to create a de facto solidarity in Europe and avoiding conflict. It did this by encouraging trade and cooperation around the very tools of war–a solution that proved very effective.
