I spoke about this as one of the last (and biggest) barriers to true open science in a blog post: communities.springernature.com/posts/sharing-…. Visas are a gatekeeping system. We should pick conference destinations that allow for a fast/smooth processing of visas, and unfortunately US/Schengen don't.
