I repeat myself but so many people did and still do not see this coming. Digitization and electrification are causing a seismic shift in the automotive industry. China's BYD now sells 200k EVs monthly, leaving even Tesla in the dust. finbold.com/chinas-byd-sel…

China controls 70%-80% of the world's production capacity for crucial EV battery components and wields significant influence across virtually every process step. Curious to see the EU and US trying to catch up and navigating the protectionism minefield. bloomberg.com/graphics/2023-…

Interesting challenge: What do you do if you have an open source architecture but want to prevent competitors from using it? That’s what the US is currently facing in its chip war with China because of the open source RISC-V processor architecture reuters.com/technology/us-…

Leica’s analog camera sales surge in light of generative AI. While it only sold ~500 a year 10 years ago, it now sells ~5k. To put this into perspective, it only sells ~12k digital cameras per year. Looks like the demand for authenticity is increasing. fastcompany.com/90985730/leica…

I did not see this coming: researchers increasingly use Harry Potter for cutting edge research on generative AI. Because Harry Potter is so well known and has such a variety of scenes, other people can relatively easily test and evaluate their results. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Couldn’t agree more with this long read: Australia provides lots of opportunities AND has a need for later stage VC. We have lots of talent, good government support, leading research institutions, etc. But it’s currently too hard for startups to scale. techcrunch.com/2023/12/28/why…

People used to buy CDs, now they buy streaming subscriptions. But the revenue of the music industry is back to its pre-Napster peak. If you're a generative AI company, your goal should be to become Spotify, not Napster.

Interesting move: Maersk—the world’s largest shipping company—invests $3 billion into green methanol manufacturing—an alternative fuel that can reduce shipping pollution. If successful, this could establish them as the market leader in a growing industry. thecooldown.com/green-business…

BYD—a Chinese EV manufacturer—overtook Tesla in quarterly car sales. BYD controls almost its entire supply chain—from mines to battery and chip production. With electronics accounting for ~40% and batteries for up to ~30% of EV costs, incumbents must have a fearful awakening.

Developing GTA VI—a game—cost $1-2B and took 11 years while producing Star Wars—the most expensive movie—cost less than $0.5B. Clearly shows the importance and economic potential of games, but also that many software products are not built "quick and dirty". Via andrew chen

Great initiative that benefita the public: To identify locations for its cell towers, AT&T analyzed the risk of various climate-related hazards 30 years into the future. They then made the resulting maps freely available so that others can benefit too. fortune.com/2023/09/25/how…

A surprising beneficiary of the AI hype: Anguilla, a tiny Caribbean island, now earns about 1/3 of its government budget with domain name registrations simply because it has been awarded the .ai domain in the past forbes.com/sites/barrycol…

Fascinating study on "third places": when a Starbucks opens in US neighborhoods without cafes, the number of startups increases. The assumption is that it provides entrepreneurs with a much needed place to network and exchange ideas. nber.org/system/files/w… via André Spicer
