Rotten Tomatoes can declare Reagan verified hot all it wants, but he's still got nothing on this weirdly sexy picture of young Nixon.

Make no mistake, this comes from the same pathology of taste that gave us "elevated horror" — genre is low, which means it's embarrassing, which means you have to tie yourself in knots explaining that your thing is Actually Art despite coveting those same base pleasures

I notice there are no writing credits on the MINECRAFT trailer or in the press release. That arbitration is going to be insane. The version I read had something like 40 writers or writing teams listed on two full title pages.

“The disgraceful propaganda of racial hatred toward the colored people which permeates this film cannot be redeemed by the purely cinematographic effects of this production.” Basically dismantling any formalist defense of BIRTH OF A NATION in 1940!!

WIZARD OF OZ is one of those perfect cinematic objects that people keep trying to reengineer, with sequels, with prequels, with remakes, and with musical extravaganzas. It's not gonna happen.
