George Breen, Italian Consul General for Scotland, Knight Commander of the Order of the Crown of Italy, died #onthisday in 1908. For 40 years, he was the representative of the Italian Government in Glasgow.

Whilst Lord Kelvin is buried in Westminster Abbey, London, he is remembered on the family stone in the Necropolis. He also has his own commemorative stone. #Kelvin200

#onthisday in 1934, Builder, Morrison Dunbar was buried in Sextus section of the Necropolis. He died a few days earlier on 1st June.

#onthisday in 1850, Jane Cowie Mitchell died. She was transferred from the crypt under Wellington Street Church to the Necropolis 29 and half years after her death. The site was being sold, as the congregation was moving church, so the bodies in crypt had to be exhumed.

#onthisday in 1858, Alexandrina Hodge, née Low, died. She was 78 years old and had been married for 53 years.

John Stewart Blackie was the son of publisher John Alexander Blackie and Sarah Gemmell. He was killed in action at the Somme. He is commemorated on the family stone. The Battle of the Somme began on 1st July 1916. 19,240 were killed on that first day. #ArmedForcesDay

#onthisday in 1864, Hugh Tennent of Tennent's Brewery died. Born into the famous family of brewers in 1780, he took over Tennent's in 1827 when his uncle, John Tennent died. Tennent's Brewery borders the Necropolis, and Hugh's grave looks towards the brewery. Tennent's Lager
