I've been finalising slides for a talk I am giving tomorrow on COVID-19 and suicidal thoughts & behaviour. These latest pre-print data from Japan are very sobering. No initial rise in suicide, but marked increase since. More needs to be done across UK to mitigate suicide risk

Our new paper, led by PhD candidate Vikas Arya, estimates male and female suicides are under reported in official suicide data in India by 27% and 50% respectively. Major implications for suicide prevention planning. jech.bmj.com/content/early/…

Our short paper in World Psych examines changes in suicide-related Internet search behaviour after a celebrity suicide in India. Large increases in the use potentially harmful AND protective search terms. Points to risks from media description of methods onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…

Such a privilege to have connected with the amazing Selba and her NGO Afri-Aus Care. Here she describes her struggles with mental health and the deep value she found in the African Ubuntu philosophy focused on social ethics and common humanity. A wonderful community leader 🙏🏻❤️

Academics speaking beyond their expertise… hmmm, we’ve certainly had a slice of that during covid. It’s an important issue to find a healthy balance on. All good points louis appleby

Great to see more Pfizer. Great to see 20-39 yo targeted. Great to see some action on rapid antigen testing. Hopefully better late than never. Evaluating obvious epidemiological patterns for obvious rapid outbreak management does not require waiting for theoretical modelling.

So divine to see the sky whales take flight this morning at Yarra Bend. Love the sentiment about the important role of carers, the backbone and heart of our communities #skywhales

What do we define as complex/multi-modal interventions in suicide research? Congrats to PhD candidate Sadhvi Krishnamoorthy for this really interesting conceptual piece 🙏🏻👏🏻mdpi-res.com/d_attachment/i…

Really interesting study on the (lack of🤦‍♂️) effects of trigger warnings and content warnings. If we can’t rely on this simple approach, then we may need to think more carefully about the actual content being put out there

Want to measure suicide stigma but don’t know what tools to use? Our recent review hopes to assist in better understanding the available measures and their current uses, as well as highlighting gaps in development and testing bit.ly/3NstnZ9. Well done Angela Nicholas!
