Eleven native species in the Rhododendron genus (group) reside in the Smokies. Although most of us think of rosebay or Catawba when they hear the word “rhododendron,” flowering azaleas also fall into this genus, like the sweet (or smooth) azalea (Rhododendron arborescens).

If you’re visiting the park this week, please remember that the bypass will close tonight between the Gatlinburg Scenic Overlook and Newfound Gap Road through Sunday, August 25 at 8 p.m.
