🌳🏠 Saying goodbye to a legendary nest! 🦜 This week, we bid farewell to one of the most successful artificial nests in our records. Installed way back in 2002, this nest has been a bustling hub of activity, fledging 19 chicks from it.

When Southern Ground-hornbills are released into a new area they are monitored to keep an eye on their behaviour, territory usage, and health. We are thankful to have Imperial Truck Rentals so we can monitor the groups on Loskop Nature Reserve..

This poem is written by one of our MSc students in Ghana - we need to be hearing the voices of our youth as the weight of turning the tide on extinction and climate change rests heavily on their shoulders! We must all do more.

The first harvest chick is safely at the Boabab Conservation Rearign Centre. Our ex-situ coordinator Elaine went to fetch this first one herself in what looked like a splendid dawn - thanks to the Lowveld team for the careful nest checks, candling and hatch date estimation.

Over the past few months, our dedicated team has been 'all hands on deck,' working tirelessly to harvest second-hatched chicks doomed to die. Excitingly, so far this season, we have successfully managed to save five individuals.

It takes a village to raise a child and luckily we have just that at the Boabab! Their help is invaluable in the hand-rearing process supporting rearer Elaine.
